Huskisson, the main gateway to Jervis Bay, and just 10km from Booderee National Park, lies on the western shores of Jervis Bay. Huskisson was first surveyed in 1840, and settled in the 1860s. It was named after William Huskisson, who was Colonial Secretary in the late 1820s. By the beginning of the 19th century its main industry was boat building, - nowadays it's tourism. Most of the restaurants are located here and the cruise boats go from Huskisson harbour (one of the prettiest on the south coast), so this is where a lot of visitors stay. Huskisson accommodation ranges from Caravan Parks and Motels to B&Bs, Guesthouses and self-contained cottages.
Sunrise at Huskisson BeachHere you can take a fascinating dolphin-watch cruise (all year round) or whale-watching (June-July and September-October), go fishing or experience some of the best diving in NSW (2 dive shops located on the main street).
For those interested in Australian heritage you can visit the Lady Denman Heritage Complex in Huskisson which features a maritime museum, whose prize exhibit is the Lady Denman Ferry. This ferry, which used to carry passengers across Sydney Harbour, is a good example of the area's shipbuilding history. The fascinating story of how it came to eventually rest at this site is told in the museum. Also in the grounds of the complex is an interesting mangrove boardwalk, the office of the Jervis Bay Marine Authority and an Aboriginal art and crafts centre Bidjigal Aboriginal Corporation, Huskisson .
Huskisson also has:
- An interesting antique shop, the Trading Post, which also serves as the local tourist information centre.
- A lovely old cinema, Huskisson Pictures, which only charges $8 for a movie!
- The Famous Husky Pub
- The Huskisson RSL Club better know as Husky RSL
- Many wonderful white sand beaches
- Activites such as: fishing (Huskisson RSL Game & Sport Fishing Club), diving, sailing, surfing, charter boats, bushwalking, bowls, sea kayaking, golf and tennis.
- A choice of restaurants (Thai, Italian, Modern Australian, Chinese), licensed clubs and the "Husky Pub".
Huskisson is a great base for exploring the Jervis Bay Territory, or as a stop-off on your way to historic Milton, Ulladulla, Batemans Bay, the far south of NSW and Melbourne.
| Vincentia, to the south of Huskisson (and originally named South Huskisson), is a large residential township whose tourist accommodation consists mainly of holiday houses. Some homes are close to its many lovely beaches, others are on the hill (which is crowned by the 9-hole Vincentia Golf Club) with views of Jervis Bay. There's a small shopping centre at Vincentia home of our favorite Bakery-Cafe, Bayview Bakery Cafe also with deli, 24-hour supermarket and an Italian, Chinese and Mexican restaurant. |
| A delightful small village with one general store (which is a good place to have lunch when visiting the nearby Booderee National Park), and a beach with the whitest sand in the world. |
