How to get to Jervis Bay

Directions to Jervis Bay from Sydney

1. Go via the Southern Highlands (and view the Tulip Festival in Spring), and then carry on through the Southern Highlands to beautiful Kangaroo Valley (lots of winding country roads). From there you can either head to Berry, or directly to Nowra.

2. Go via Canberra (for Floriade in Spring), and then come to Jervis Bay from Canberra (about 3 hrs from Canberra) via Batemans Bay (see "Directions to Jervis Bay from the south") or Kangaroo Valley. You can also come from Canberra via the Turpentine Rd, which is for the more adventurous (but only in dry weather) -see "The Turpentine Rd" section below.

3. Go via Hwy 1 (quickest).

Jervis Bay map

For any of these 3 routes, you first need to get on the Eastern Distributor Rd to Southern Cross Drive which goes out of the city via the airport. At the end of Southern Cross Drive a lot of people get into into a right hand lane because they're going to the airport, but you don't, you keep to the left hand side which goes up over a two-lane over-pass, and is signposted to Wollongong.

For drives 1 & 2 via the Southern Highlands or Canberra, keep to the left 2 lanes and follow the signs for the M5 (see next section for this route). For drive 3 just keep heading straight and you'll go past Brighton-Le-Sands and Kogarah. After about an hour you'll go past Wollongong. After another half hour you'll go past Kiama (worth a stop for its pretty shops and blowhole). If you want a diversion (approx. 20km) to a boardwalk through a rainforest, you can follow the signs to Jamberoo and Minnamurra Rainforest. After Kiama you can then decide whether you want the route through Berry, which has lots of interesting antique shops, or the coastal route of Gerringong, Gerroa, Seven Mile beach and Shoalhaven Heads.

Whichever way you go, you'll go through Nowra, then South Nowra, and about 10 km after this you'll see a sign to Jervis Bay. Follow the sign by turning left off the highway, and about 5km after the emu farm, you'll turn left to Huskisson (signposted). Then follow directions in 'Directions to Jervis Bay Guesthouse when you reach Huskisson' section.

Directions to Jervis Bay via M5 and Kangaroo Valley

If coming from the city, follow directions in previous section to get onto the M5.

On the M5 you will go past a sign for the South Coast/King George's Rd (this is an alternative to going through Brighton-Le-Sands, and takes you back onto Highway 1 around Kogorah). Ignore this and keep going. The next turn-off is signposted as "Heathcote Rd". This also gets you back onto Highway 1, but missing out on Sydney's suburbs. I don't know if it's faster than just heading straight down Highway 1 from the city, but it may be ideal for overseas visitors who're nervous about driving in Sydney, and don't want to go through Kangaroo Valley's hairpin bends. Ignore this turn-off and you'll eventually reach the end of the M5, which then becomes the Hume Hwy (route 31). You just keep on this for a long time until you see a sign for Moss Vale/Mittagong via Bowral (route 89), where you will turn left at the Moss Vale roundabout onto the Illawarra Hwy (route 48) and follow route in next paragraph. This is the scenic route if you want to stop and browse a few antique/craft stores. If you don't, keep going straight and take the next exit for Moss Vale/Berrima (route 89). Keep following signs for Moss Vale (though you can detour to Berrima if you want to see a very pretty historic sandstone village).

At Moss Vale turn left (signposted to Bowral/Wollongong), drive right through the town until you get to a roundabout where you turn right to Nowra on the Illawarra Hwy (route 48).

You then take a right and then left turn (signposted to Nowra) until you're on Nowra Rd heading to Kangaroo Valley. Here the fun begins. You have to see Fitzroy Falls (parking is on the left), and then there's a breathtaking drive down the mountain to the pretty village of Kangaroo Valley. Hint: when the traffic signs say 20Km/hr on a hairpin bend, they mean it! You then have another scenic (and equally breathtaking) drive out of the valley. You can turn off left and go via Berry if you want to do more shopping, or go straight on via Canbewarra following signs to Nowra. At Nowra, follow directions in Highway 1 section.

Directions to Jervis Bay Guesthouse when you reach Huskisson

Assuming you've come in from the north (Jervis Bay Rd, and then Huskisson Rd):-

Husky map

  • Drive through Huskisson, noting the beautiful harbour on the left.
  • Turn right at the roundabout opposite the pub (signposted to Vincentia)
  • Take the second road on the left (Nowra St).
  • Go to the end of this, and we're the last house on the right. You should see the bay in front of you.

The Turpentine Rd (for getting to Jervis Bay from Canberra)

Morton National Park

View of Morton National Park from Turpentine Rd

Get a map that shows the road! This is my vague recollection of the Turpentine Rd, which is unsealed for most of its length. Remember not to go down it if it's been raining 2-3 days beforehand. Ring the NRMA or the pub at the very start of the road which I think is called The Loaded Dog (?) or the pub (which does big burgers) or store in Sassafras (the store is worth stopping in to view dramatic photos of the road when it was flooded). Take the Nerriga Rd from Braidwood. Towards the end of the Rd there's beautiful Tjanjara waterfall. Its stream passes under the road, and if you walk 20m alongside it you'll get to the edge of the waterfall (pictured above) and have a good view of Morton National Park. Towards the end of the road there are several small roads that cut across to Princes Hwy. If you're sick of the dirt track you may be able to take any of these, and then turn left when you get to the Hwy (which might take you through Wandandian), and then follow the instructions in the next paragraph from the Tomerong and St. George's Basin turnoff.

Directions to Jervis Bay from the south (eg Bateman's Bay, Ulladulla)

Go past the Sussex Inlet and Basin View turnoffs. Take the next turnoff which should be signposted for Tomerong and St. George's Basin. Head left at the first roundabout immediately off the highway, heading through Tomerong (don't go straight on for St. George's Basin), and then turn right towards Huskisson onto Pine Forest Rd (signposted). At the end of this take a left and an immediate right to get onto Huskisson Rd. Follow instructions in the 'Directions to Jervis Bay Guesthouse when you reach Huskisson' section when you reach Huskisson.
